Press Release

Galerie Lelong & Co., New York, is pleased to announce a solo presentation of sculptural book works by Michelle Stuart for Frieze Viewing Room in collaboration with Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Beverly Hills.

This presentation is part of Frieze New York’s curated program “Spotlight,” a showcase of solo exhibitions of work by pioneering figures of the 20th century and is curated by Laura Hoptman (Executive Director of the Drawing Center, New York).

This will mark the first presentation solely dedicated to Stuart’s book works, which have been an integral component of her practice and were often made from indigenous materials found at sites where she executed her unique Land Art-based works. The artist’s books had been included in Stuart’s major presentation at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017), Viva Arte Viva! curated by Christine Macel.

"[Stuart's] book-like objects...chart their own poetic lexicon—a 'language of marks,' to adopt the title of one such tome... the books present more of a 'mystery' to the viewer—most cannot be opened, and few contain actual language or information... They cannot be read; they must be read as forms." – Mira Dayal on Michelle Stuart's books, "Leaves of Grass," Artforum, February 2020
