American artist Nancy Spero (1926–2009) was one of the pioneers in feminist art. At the same time, she was deeply interested in large, ever-present existential issues. She perceived herself as a political artist and used her art to take a stand on social problems and political events. Through unconventional materials, new forms of expression and an explicit political commitment, she broke in the 1960s with the established art scene and was active in founding the women's gallery A.I.R. in New York in the 1970s.

The exhibition at the Nordic Watercolour Museum has been created together with Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany. The presentation includes some seventy works and room installations. An exhibition catalog is produced in collaboration with the German publisher Steidl.
