Press Release

Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to present at Art Basel Miami Beach with works by Etel Adnan, McArthur Binion, Sarah Cain, Günther Förg, Alfredo Jaar, Samuel Levi JonesJannis Kounellis, Robert MangoldAna Mendieta, Hélio Oiticica, Jaume Plensa, Zilia Sánchez, Sean Scully, Nancy Spero, Kiki Smith, Antoni Tàpies, and Fabienne Verdier. The booth includes a special Kabinett Sector with rare works on paper by Hélio Oiticica and Ivan Serpa, two members of the Rio de Janeiro-based collective Grupo Frente who later pioneered key visual movements.

Grupo Frente, founded by Serpa in 1954, remained at the forefront of the artist collectives in the region through 1956. Members like Oiticica later became internationally recognized for their innovative studies of line, form, and color. Oiticica’s investigations within these early Grupo Frente works continued into his later, complex three-dimensional forms of brilliant color such as Relevos Espaciais (Spatial Reliefs), which will also be on view in the main booth.

Central to the main booth is Duna’s Dream (2015), a bronze sculpture and portrait of serene interiority by Jaume Plensa. Plensa recently installed the new large-scale sculpture, Source, in downtown Montreal and is featured in a major solo exhibition Talking Continents this winter at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Wisconsin. Another highlight will be a monumental painting by Günther Förg, which will be at the forefront of the presentation.

Several historic and rarely seen works by Alfredo Jaar, created in Chile during General Augusto Pinochet’s oppressive dictatorship, will also occupy a special section of the booth. Jaar is currently the subject of a major solo exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Garden of Good and Evil, which includes a new permanent outdoor installation. Work by McArthur Binion, whose abstractions using copies of his private documents were exhibited at this year’s Venice Biennale, along with Kiki Smith and Zilia Sánchez, align formal concerns with embodied explorations of personal history. Binion is currently presenting new paintings in a solo exhibition, Route One: Box Two, at Galerie Lelong & Co., New York, on view through December 23, 2017.
